(Motivation-Succeed, 2015)

"The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential... these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence".

(BrainyQuote, 2015)

Motivation.....

It begins, sustains or carries on and directs one's activities (Zwener 2005)

Is an urge, which is created because of the absence of something desirable for the organism (Mukherjee, 2009)

The process of arousing and sustaining goal directed behaviour (Mukherjee, 2009)

The desire to do something for a certain reason (Zwener, 2005)

Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation

"In Self-Determination Theory (SDT; Deci & Ryan, 1985) we distinguish between different types of motivation based on the different reasons or goals that give rise to an action. The most basic distinction is between intrinsic motivation, which refers to doing something because it is inherently interest- ing or enjoyable, and extrinsic motivation, which refers to doing something because it leads to a separable outcome" (Ryan and Deci, 2000).

"Maslow (1943) stated that people are motivated to achieve certain needs. When one need is fulfilled a person seeks to fullfil the next one, and so on" (McLeod, 2007).

"Maslow believed that humans have to satisfy basic needs before they can go on to what is termed growth needs. He believed the highest growth need to be self-actualisation" (Zwener, 2005).

"Intrinsic motivation involves engaging in a behavior because it is personally rewarding; essentially, performing an activity for its own sake rather than the desire for some external reward" (McGill University, 2015).

People have Internal desires to perform a particular task, and do certain activities because it gives them pleasure, develops a particular skill, or It’s morally the right thing to do.

Examples of intrinsic motivations:

  •  Acceptance: The need to feel that you, as well as your decisions, are accepted by your co-workers.

  •  Curiosity: The desire to be 'in the know'.

  •  HonourThe need to respect the rules and to be ethical.

  •  Independence:  The need to feel you are unique.

  •  Order: The need to be organized.

  •  Power: The desire to be able to have influence.

  •  Social contactThe need to have some social interactions.

  •  Social Status: The desire to feel important.

"Extrinsic Motivation Occurs when we are motivated to perform a behavior or engage in an activity in order to earn a reward or avoid a punishment" (McGill University, 2015).

Dealing  with motivations that are outside of your passions, and personal self-esteem, or anything outside of yourself that you need to obtain or acquire to increase motivation is extrinsic motivation (Ryan, 2015).

Examples of Extrinsic motivation:

  • Money

  • Award Recognition

  • Bonuses; Benefit Packages

  • Nice cars

  • Expensive Houses

  • Highgrades in school

  • Gold stars for athletics

What Motivates Me?

Different people are motivated in different ways. Motivators are universal but people are drawn to it at different levels, thus an important thing one, is less important to another (Bagshawe, 2011)

Personally and Professionally, I am primarily intrinsically motivated. It was confirmed with a  motivation test we did in tutorial. My strongest top five positive motivators were to have/feel/experience Power and Control; Achievement; Stimulation; Independence and progress (Bagshawe, 2011).

Possession; Meaning and Purpose; Connection and Belonging; Contribution; Self Expression; Constancy were my second highest positive motivators, whilst my least of my motivators I would like to have/feel/experience are Physical Condition and Change (Bagshawe, 2011).

Getting paid for doing the things that I truly enjoy doing motivates me internally. I feel rewarded by positive comments received from a member of staff to do with my performance and customer care rather than material rewards. I feel motivated when I get the chance to assist any of my colleagues in any way possible.

Attending my practical; Spa shift; Lectures and Tutorials rewards me, knowing that I am improving  my confidence, extending my knowledge and attending to the client’s needs appropriately and successfully.

I am very pro-active when everI am working. Helping on my spa shift and getting involved in the smooth running of the spa, getting positive feedback and thank yous' delights me.

I am both intrinsic and extrinsic motivated, but my intrinsic motivation out weighs my extrinsic motivation.  I like to have nice cars, houses and fanciful things, but it does not motivate me as much as getting paid for doing the job I enjoy doing. Passiontely doing what I enjoy most, attracts both intrinsic and extrinsic rewards, hence can afford to live happilly.
