This programme develops an understanding of the nature of the spa environment through the study of subject areas such as management, science and therapeutic skills, with an emphasis on the need to reflect on and question the diverse values and practices that shape the industry today. The programme is structured to offer you progressive development of academic skills, professional spa skills, and knowledge and critical thinking embedded in work place practices.

This programme offers you a unique opportunity to study in a subject that is not widely available and, to specialise in management in an exciting and expanding area of the leisure industry around the world (University of Derby, 2015). 

I am very excited to be on foundation degree program and very privilleged to be part of University of Derby, Buxton, where it all started.  First year is nearly over and I cannot beleive the extensive knowledge I have acquired during this long but short time. Already, I see myself of having endless opportunities to expand on my knowledge both academically and practically. The assignments within this program, has really improved my style of writing dramatically and my urge to read. I enjoy reading journals now compared to before starting this course, where reading a story book was even a struggle. The support from the tutors and the spa team is tremendous. 

The modules in this foundation program  are:

Academic Study Skills; Applied Spa Skills; Anatomy and Physiology; International Spa Concept; Finance in the Service Industries and Human Resource Management for Service Industries.

Through these modules, I have gained so far knowledge in the specific areas such as business management skills, Graduate Attributes  and Professional Development. Working in the commercial Spa has been a great experience applying my knowledge and skills on clients. Various training sessions of treatments, product knowledge, retailing, pool testing and the general running of the spa has made me job ready. It has given me the confidence of been able to go out there to work for any high end spa. 

I am looking forward to gaining more knowledge in the other year to come, and graduate onto The Bachelor Degree program.
